Invitations To Attend
Throughout the Dallas area, Fae messenger arrive bearing a gorgeous white paper snowflake with text inscribed with silver ink.
These impossibly white cards are invitations for various individuals to attend a celebration on the 15th of May.
A handful of them appear to have additional handwritten notes, specifically requesting the attendance of a few individuals in light of recent events. It appears to be the last celebration prior to the arrival of full high summer, and Winter enters its “seclusion.”
The Marchioness is throwing a party.
Side Note – Erica’s player was not able to attend so, whether she was in attendance or not is up to the player. Otherwise, a Fae delivered the message to the residence late Sunday and probably Claret took it, set it down somewhere, and then the rest of Erica’s junk mail probably got tossed on top on Monday. She then forgot to draw specific attention to it for whatever reason (most likely she left the apartment to deal with personal matters and just didn’t remember to tell Erica there was something special) or something else that provides for a comical series of blunders that basically results in… Erica missed a big ole party thrown by the Winter Court.
Conor – Marisa and Brett’s Bad Morning
Marisa and a badly cut up/bleeding Brett show up on Conor’s doorstep.
Apparently Marisa came home shortly after sunrise after a night of information gathering and discovered The Den drenched in blood and chunks of meat were scattered everywhere. She immediately starts moving through the house, taking everything in. As she is about to leave the way she came she hears something from the garage that sounds like Brett and moves to investigate.
She opens the door to see a severely injured Brett, holding a monkey-wrench. He checks his weakening swing when he sees it’s Marisa and issues a warning. Spinning around, she sees Fae Malks… lots of them… moving to attack. Basically a moving cloud of fur, glowing eyes, and claws, snarling and yowling with an unearthly cacophony.
She grabs Brett, slams the door, which only buys them a few seconds, and takes a gamble that between all the iron in the garage, the fact this is “her den” and not the Malk’s den, that they cannot step into the Nevernever from here… she “pulls” Brett through with her using the tricks she learned from her Fae ex-boyfriend.
She guesses correctly and they escape via Nevernever and physical world paths to the only safe fortress she knows, the aforementioned ex-boyfriend’s mansion in Highland Park. When they arrive, Conor gathers up his compatriots to hear about the grizzly demise of the Fort Wolf Posse.
Jamie, Elena, Conor, Matthew – Countess of Cats
After gathering the assistance of a few Pixie informants and asking Brett (who is healed enough to participate by Matthew), they’re able to piece together the events.
The Countess of Cats, a new member of the Winter Court, is tasked with wrangling the now overflowing population of Malks following the imprisonment of The Erlking’s Daughter by The Marchioness. Apparently she has a severe desire for payback against the FWP (which made a name for itself initially by killing off the Wyldfae Malk population in the metroplex a couple years ago). How the Countess of Cats and her Malk minions got past the threshold and wards is a mystery until they find out who the Countess is… Veronica.
Marisa and Brett inform the heroes that in the wake of recent events, friction within the pack was at an all time high and morale through the floor. Ramon was perceived as weak following what happened to the pack itself (apparently some deaths and morale/discipline issues) plus the loss of his wolf tooth necklace, etc. Peripheral to all that, as Marisa was the pack’s information source on Summer and Wyld Fae, Veronica (who was the most psychologically … in synch … with Winter) was sent to find out more about the Winter Court. Apparently she threw her lot in with Winter officially in exchange for power.
Having no idea for what to do next, or options, Elena puts Marisa and Brett in contact with John Wolf. Meanwhile, though disturbing, it appears to have been an “internal Winter Court matter” (in that The Fort Wolf Posse wasn’t an Accorded power) it generally appears that it’s resolved.
Prepping For The Party
Around lunchtime, the Metroplex starts to realize that something’s up… a line of hail, severe thunderstorms, & tornados rips through Missouri, Oklahoma, and North Texas seeming to form a “line” of storms from north to south…
The party itself takes place at The Stoneleigh (aka “Le Méridien Dallas”), a 170 room understated luxury Art Deco hotel in Dallas on Maple avenue built in the mid 1920s. It also features a rooftop area for parties… tonight, taken over by the Winter Court.
As the guests arrive, the rooftop has been Glamoured to show the storm in all its violent beauty – a “dome” of magic allows the guests to remain dry and view the spectacular storm ripping through Dallas. As expected, the place is cold – a giant throne of ice has been set up within the dome. After the guests have had a chance to dine on the various refreshments (a table for mortals has been set aside absolutely overflowing with high-dollar H’ors d’oeuvres, beverages, and delicacies); The Marchioness herself bids all welcome and introduces the night’s “guest of honor” … her “sister” (literal? figurative?)… Maeve, The Winter Lady.
If The Lady of Winter came to Dallas from Chicago this late in the Spring… the storms make more sense now at least.
Then things get odd for those of a more classic Western-European, Judeo-Christian based cultural upbringing (read “mortals”). Sure there’s music, there’s dancing, there’s socializing, and various individuals enjoying each others’ company in various niches and out of the way places… but this is Winter and they’re just… different.
The Marchioness comes and personally greets each of the heroes that are in attendance, exchanging pleasantries. The unspoken is that this is a form of formal thanks, though she never actually says as much. Zanna invites the heroes to take the food home as well as some minor gifts (which turns out to be sterling silver plates and silverware with a snowflake motif). The rest of the heroes are hesitant but Pallas has no such reservations, getting himself nearly a full dinner set in the process.
Sold For The Lady’s Pleasure
The only truly interesting exchange of the night occurs over Tom Kazansky who is introduced by The Marchioness to Maeve. He is in his “Iceman” shape and that really appears to appeal to Maeve. She gets very, very interested… so much so that (with him standing there) Maeve and The Marchioness get into a debate over who he belongs to and how much to “buy” him “for a night.”
(During the argument, Maeve calls The Marchioness “mwireen” (Muirín) but only Conor would probably have caught the spelling though it did seem to be a given name)
They then get into a very public “bartering” situation where The Marchioness sets the price at “Nine Nines” and Maeve retorts that no single mortal is worth “Nine Nines” and counters with only a “Single Nine.” With Maeve seemingly unable to keep her hands off Tom (and her body appearing to be alive with desire), the bartering ends at “Two Nines.” The Marchioness refines it with “of Sidhe” and Maeve agrees, taking her new toy with her into the Nevernever.
As Conor explains what “Nines” are, The Marchioness seems to go around to the various assembled Fae and appears to select eighteen beautiful and deadly Fae who all bow (or curtsey) to her. Conor explains that a “Nine” is a very, very old Irish way of grouping warriors into “squads” for battle. Nine nines was considered a full fighting “company” (81 men). He speculates that a few new Fae faces would be moving to Dallas in the coming months.
Making a comment that only those with very good hearing would have caught, she laughs “Oh sister, ruled by your passions. Enjoy him.”
Matthew, Barbara, Belle, Elena, and Jamie get the heck out of there as soon as they feel a lull…
In the days to come, rumors start circulating that the Orcs have vanished and that the caverns of the Orc Marches are empty…
