Synopsis – Marisa and Brett’s Bad Morning
Covered in Episode #2.12 Texas Twister but re-summarized here
Marisa came home shortly after sunrise after a night of information gathering and discovered The Den drenched in blood and chunks of meat were scattered everywhere. She immediately starts moving through the house, taking everything in. As she is about to leave the way she came she hears something from the garage that sounds like Brett and moves to investigate.
She opens the door to see a severely injured Brett, holding a monkeywrench. He checks his weakening swing when he sees it’s Marisa and issues a warning. Spinning around, she sees Fae Malks… lots of them… moving to attack. Basically a moving cloud of fur, glowing eyes, and claws, snarling and yowling with an unearthly cacophony.
She grabs Brett, slams the door, which only buys them a few seconds, and takes a gamble that between all the iron in the garage, the fact this is “her den” and not the Malk’s den, that they cannot step into the Nevernever from here… she “pulls” Brett through with her using the tricks she learned from her Fae ex-boyfriend.
She guesses correctly and they escape via Nevernever and physical world paths to the only safe fortress she knows, the aforementioned ex-boyfriend’s mansion in Highland Park. When they arrive, Conor gathers up his compatriots to hear about the grizzly demise of the Fort Wolf Posse. After gathering the assistance of a few Pixie informants and asking Brett (who is healed enough to participate by Matthew), they’re able to piece together the events.
The Countess of Cats, a new member of the Winter Court, is tasked with wrangling the now overflowing population of Malks following the imprisonment of The Erlking’s Daughter by The Marchioness. Apparently she has a severe desire for payback against the FWP (which made a name for itself initially by killing off the Wyldfae Malk population in the metroplex a couple years ago). How the Countess of Cats and her Malk minions got past the threshold and wards is a mystery until they find out who the Countess is… Veronica.
Marisa and Brett inform the heroes that in the wake of recent events, friction within the pack was at an all time high and morale through the floor. Ramon was perceived as weak following what happened to the pack itself (apparently some deaths and morale/discipline issues) plus the loss of his wolf tooth necklace, etc. Peripheral to all that, as Marisa was the pack’s information source on Summer and Wyld Fae, Veronica (who was the most psychologically … in synch … with Winter) was sent to find out more about the Winter Court. Apparently she threw her lot in with Winter officially in exchange for power.
Having no idea for what to do next, or options, Elena puts Marisa and Brett in contact with John Wolf.
John, Elena, Marisa – Unpleasant Things
They grab some sandwiches and an early lunch in Downtown Dallas (technically it’s a workday for John) at Joe Mama’s BBQ. After visiting with Teresa Williams for a bit, Marisa alludes to the fact that she has no pack. A surprise to John Wolf to say the least. They get their lunches bagged up to go, and adjourn to a nearby park to talk more freely.
At the park, Marisa brings John up to speed with what had been discovered up to that point. John offers his home as temporarily lodgings until they figure out what’s up. They then decide to head back to the old Den and see if they can glean some additional information.
When they make it back to Grapevine, they enter and inspect the house, going room-by-room and confirm it’s “clear.” John then uses some of his psychometry powers to get a vision of what actually happened. He sees that, shortly before dawn, Veronica opened the door and invited a swarm of Malks into the home. Then, appearing to gesture and mutter words as if she had magical powers, she leads the Malks into Luisa and Ramon’s room and sends her swarm of fanged/clawed death against Luisa. She is basically dead before she wakes up, then, combining magic from the doorway with a countless swarm of Fae buzzsaws, they finish off Ramon as well.
Following these initial deaths, she unleashes the Malks on everyone else in the house and takes Ramon’s necklace for herself.
Afterwards, they call Conor and ask if it would be possible to send fae to “clean up” the house. Conor informs them that they shouldn’t be there when the “cleaners” arrive. He then contacts a few of the more “old school” Fae who once enjoyed the taste of human blood but have had to be on “good behavior” due to the Accords… they’re send to clean up the blood and flesh.
They recover a few of Brett’s sentimental baubles (rings and a photo of his family) and get out of there after recovering Marisa’s car. They take both vehicles to Marisa’s apartment and while there, discover a Malk “spy” watching the place. Marisa decides that nothing in her apartment is important enough that she can’t replace it and they get out of there.
John, Marisa, Brett, and Elena – Reforging a Pack
They bring Brett to John’s home and get him situated. Marisa excuses herself to go and get some supplies from a nearby pharmacy (for Brett’s injuries). During that, John goes off to a greenbelt and communes with his Wolf Totem spirit to inquire if him bringing in a pack is a good thing… which apparently is quite okay with his totem.
“It is good that you have a pack at last.”
When Marisa gets back, she tends to Brett and then joins John and Elena discussing events and what to do next. During the discussions, it comes out that Cody Lorance (recently suspended from the Department of Public Safety) is being bankrolled by Conor to start up a private detective agency… something John had been considering as well. Marisa shares some of her “intel” as well as her skillset and it’s fairly clear she’d be an asset in any such investigative operation. They decide to try a formal “pack” and John, Marisa, and Brett (woken up from his nap) as well as Elena (as witness) step into the Nevernever in John’s home to commune with Wolf Totem. It goes quite well. Wolf Totem also observes that Brett and Marisa have hearts of concrete and asphalt and are spiritually “hollow” … having been taught merely the outward skill of shapeshifting into Wolves, but none of the internal strength of spirit of a true Wolf kin…. but he’ll be more than happy to help them work on that.
John and Elena – Meeting with Zanna
They decide to find out more about the Countess of Cats and get in touch with Zanna, who’s busy at The Stoneleigh hotel, getting reading for tomorrow night’s Winter Court celebrations. They arrive and briefly inquire as to the Countess of Cat’s whereabouts and intentions towards John Wolf’s new packmates.
Zanna listens and hears the unspoken… The Countess of Cats messes with Marisa and Brett, the Scooby Squad takes it personal. That Veronica’s personal vendetta against Luisa is over, she’s done, or it gets really messy, really fast. Zanna informs Elena and John that she’ll be happy to inform the new Countess of the reality of continuing her personal grudge from this point forward against individuals currently very, very high on the Marchioness’s list of mortals that she likes a great deal.
Belle, Palla, John, Elena, Marisa, Brett – Ward
Realizing that a Threshold may not be enough, and unsure about how Zanna would do with talking to the Countess of Cats, they contact Belle and cash in favor… of course, Belle considers it nothing of the kind as is happy to throw up a basic Ward. In her mind, throwing a Ward up around a home for wolves was right up her alley.
John Wolf pays for the mundane things, and since they only had a single afternoon to get ready, it’s basically just a pig in the ground (cooking overnight), some beer, and lunch the next day (the 15th) a big BBQ lunch with some very odd “toasts” performed.
Following the tornados that ripped through North Texas and Oklahoma on the 15th, John Wolf takes his new pack up to Cherokee country for various things (he has to deal with some family issues) plus teach Marisa and Brett about some tribal stuff (and some time on the gun range).
Friends from Austin came up for a day and while sitting around talking about recent events within the campaign… it turned into a game session with some pretty interesting character milestones/development.
