Giggling behind her hand, she smiled at her best friend. Verdia and she were having a celebratory “GNO” for the beginning of summer. But when a brownie started yelling at them you can bet they were out of there quick.
Once they were out, and the giggles died down, Chrys started to feel a little upset.
Summer was her mother’s season. And while Chrys missed her father and brother, her mother was another story.
Chrys turned toward Verdia, who had a concerned look on her face.
“I know that face, that’s your worried face. What’s wrong?” asked Verdia again.
Chrys sighed. “I was thinking… thinking about family.”
Verdia nodded. She understood this was a sensitive topic. She would let Chrys talk if she wanted to.
“It’s just that… my mother…“ Chrys trailed off, hoping Verdia would understand. And fortunately, Verdia did.
As they neared Chrys’ pink and purple Victorian style Barbie house, Verdia asked, “Do you want me to stay awhile?”
Chrys nodded as they flew up. “You can help fight the big bad monsters.”
They both laughed at the feeble joke as Chrys opened the door. When She walked in Chrys saw her worst nightmare before her eyes. A beautiful fae stood in the parlor, she had long gorgeous golden hair, bright emerald green eyes, and she wore a floor length dress, and she was holding one of Chrys’ cups.
When she saw Chrys, her eyes brightened and she started to say something, “Chrys! Sweethe-“ but she was interrupted by the slam of the door that Chrys had backed out.
As Chrys sagged against the door, all she said was, “Speak of the devil.”
