The game picks up right where it left off… around 3am on the morning of Christmas Eve day. He heroes travel down to LINC Downtown to get the home address of Brandon Holton and while there… run into the ghosts of many of his victims, given the power to appear on Christmas Eve, much like many other “High Holy Nights” of the year like Halloween (in some of their cases this night represents the night of their death at his or his client’s hands).
Needless to say, Matthew and the heroes are a little concerned by the appearance of so many specters. Matthew even recognizes several of the ghosts as people he had contacted and put into Brandon’s path. Matthew had been told that they left the state for various reasons (to reunite with family, got jobs elsewhere, and so forth). However, apparently they had met their dooms at Brandon’s hands… or his clients.
As they were leaving to go to Brandon’s home address… they encountered Cody Lorance, Texas Ranger. A member of the Ranger Special Force that was assigned to the rash of missing persons in Dallas. Elena and Jaime are especially concerned by the appearance of mortal authority, especially in the hands of a Texas Ranger and all the extra-judicial powers that it represented. However it became clear after conversation that this particular Ranger was … different.
As they prepared to leave, Ren got a call from Uncle and had to leave suddenly. The group continued to Brandon’s residence, an old private picnic/cabin rental facility on the western shore of White Rock Lake. They encountered sentries… but owing to it being 4 in the morning, they (the sentries) were asleep.
The PCs approached the house on foot and Matthew banged on the door and got Brandon downstairs… Conor and Jaime were under veils and Elena was being her usual sneaky self. When Brandon opened the door he saw Matthew and the Texas Ranger and when confronted with the accusation of his crimes, he fled… in wolf form… out the back door/through the glass.
Elena was the only one of the heroes fast enough to keep up with the fleeing Hexenwulf, Jaime went to keep up with them as best he could. Matthew, Conor, and Ranger Lorance made it as far as the private cabins when they encountered half a dozen or more Orcs that had more fully gone over to their goblin natures and would have been unable to operate normally in human society.
After the Ranger identified himself, aided by a subtle glamour from Conor, the Orcs fled rather than pursue an altercation with the heroes.
Meanwhile, by the lake’s shore, Brandon (who had never encountered one that could keep up with him in terms of speed) turned to observe how his Orcish compatriots were doing against the Ranger… only to find himself in a gunfight with Elena. He was able to savage Elena’s leg before getting shot solidly and then fried by a lightning-bolt out of the cloudy December morning sky (summoned by Jaime of course).
Brandon “came to” near a boathouse on the lake, missing his Hexenwulf belt, surrounded by angry ghosts (his victims), and the PCs… he was half mad, and Jaime pushed him all the way over. At which point he spilled everything he knew about what was going on. Amongst Supernaturals “in the know” he was known as the “Missing Link” and facilitated the acquisition of human “prey” for more powerful supernatural predators as well as provided a body disposal service (subcontracting out to Hell T and his boys in Oak Cliff) when needed.
He had no idea how many humans he was responsible for their deaths or disappearances.
The PCs left Brandon to his fate at the hands of the malignant ghosts who were there for vengeance… but Matthew gave him one more chance at redemption. Not a chance to save his body… but a chance to save his soul. He took it… confessing his actions and begging the uncaring ghosts for forgiveness … and then, afterwards, he died as the ghosts ripped him to pieces.
As they ransacked the house for further evidence and information they left the house… only to discover a mysterious cloaked, hooded, and powerful figure awaiting them outside, surrounded by mist and fog. The Witch of White Rock Lake had arrived with a cryptic message… if they planned on attacking the Vizconde of the Red Court they should consider… the current one was a fool, but if they killed him, a more powerful and competent lord would come and take his place. Then as they heroes turned to discuss this new piece of information with each other… the Witch vanished as she had appeared.
The heroes then rested for a few hours and reunited at daybreak to move on the most vital piece of information they gained from Brandon. The location of the Red Court “main house” in Cockrel Hill where “The Christmas Eve Banquet” occurred every year. Apparently the Red Court of Dallas had a tradition of celebrating the season by bringing in “new members” on Christmas Eve. That’s what the 12 missing persons were for… the hors d’oeuvres or perhaps main course.
They stormed the Red Court lair in daylight, with Conor and Matthew coming through the Nevernever to save the humans… and were able to slay Rafa’s girlfriend and right-hand man in the battle as well as 9 Red-Court Infected before allowing the Vizconde to flee (wounded).
All seemed well when some “goblins” of Winter arrived bearing a missive from The Marchioness… thrice had Conor ripped open ways to the Nevernever while in her domain and, of late, he had engaged several of her minions (the Orcs) in battle… Conor was being “summoned” before the turning of the next moon to meet with her. Uh oh.
The Ranger saw to the missing persons and doctored whatever evidence needed doctoring to make it all seem logical and tidy (one of the bonus features of the Special Force he was part of). Jaime returned the Hexenwulf belt to Uncle and discussed matters regarding the White Council amongst other things. Matthew talked with allies and contacts of his at the Dallas Seminary.
- Game Date 12/11/2011 GM Wolfhound
- Major Milestone
- Significant Milestone
- Ren (her second)
- Major Milestone
This is a major milestone for the characters that made it to both sessions for several reasons.
- It removes both a Location as well as a Face from the campaign = LINC
- It represents a turning point for several of the characters as they are becoming more and more aware of the unfriendly nature of the supernatural world in Dallas
- Matthew especially due to his Trouble Aspect undergoing major change
- The PCs seriously weakened the Red Court in Dallas as well and removed a major asset of several of the “movers and shakers” of the setting… LINC downtown and Brandon Holton provided valuable body disposal and food acquisition services for some really nasty creatures… now that he’s gone, there will be a ripple effect
